Appreciation. There’s nothing like watching someone else appreciate your work or accomplishment, is there? They’re seeing something new and wonderful and you are making a deep connection by sharing.
A few weeks ago, Trinity hosted the local chapter of the AIA (American Institute of Architects) for a lecture on the noted architect Charles Schweinfurth. As you know, Schweinfurth designed our beautiful cathedral, in addition to many other Cleveland landmarks. Sadly, many of these have been lost to time. But Trinity stands as a jewel in his historical legacy and is a beacon for many Clevelanders.
Trinity docents offered tours afterward, and there were original architectural drawings scattered about the conference room to devour, printed on linen and offering a glimpse into the genius and care given to each detail of our buildings.
It was thrilling to watch 200 or so architects and designers discover the beauty of our sacred space. They gazed up at the different chandeliers, admired our stained glass, and asked about the reredos. They appreciated—and loved—what we love, and seeing it through their eyes reminded many of us there that Trinity belongs, in fact, to so many others in the broader Cleveland community than our congregation. What Schweinfurth dreamed up 120 years ago and what we call our home is something to be grateful for, and to keep preserving for centuries to come.
Caring for this gorgeous cathedral is a serious endeavor. The vestry and property committee monitor its condition and any repairs that are needed on a monthly basis to keep it functioning. Now, there is a need to take on some needed repairs and restoration so that it endures. Hopefully you have seen a few of the stained glass windows that have been restored and their surrounding masonry replaced—and there are more in process.
But we want to hear your thoughts and input! Join us Sunday, June 15th at coffee hours after the 8:00 am and 10:00 am services where we will dream our future. We’ve engaged a design team from Marous Brothers Construction and you will get a chance to meet them, see the ideas we’re considering, and learn about some of the historic features we’re discovering. If you cannot attend, look for a survey to send us your thoughts.
