What a gift it is to return from sabbatical and see Trinity so lively, even as we move into the later weeks of summertime! Oftentimes, when a minister takes time away, the work of ministry can slow down—or even enter a state of suspended animation. Not at Trinity Cathedral, apparently!
We are deep into dreaming and discerning possibilities for Cathedral Hall and other major projects. We continue to gather for events like LGBTQ cookouts and Homeless Help 101—an orientation for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of what our unhoused neighbors experience, so that we can be better equipped to meet them where they are.
And, of course, we are actively planning for fall events and programming. It’s a busy season indeed!
I’ve spent my first week back both catching up and preparing for the months to come—learning what needs attention and reconnecting with the pastoral concerns of the congregation. As I do, I’m reminded at every turn how fortunate we are to have a staff and vestry who offered such strong leadership over the past months. I am especially grateful for Jeff Spiess, Senior Warden, and Canon Adrienne Koch, for their steady and faithful presence.
I had a profound experience during my time away, and I look forward to sharing some of it with you. I’ll offer a forum on my sabbatical early this fall, and I’ll also share bits and pieces over the coming months through things like sermons and Substack posts. Just as I hope to thread the experience into my life and ministry going forward, I plan to weave what I’ve learned into the life of the cathedral community in ways that are generative and creative. Stay tuned!
Thank you so much for your prayers during this time away. It’s good to be back.

The Very Rev. Bernard J. Owens
