Sounds of the Cathedral

Transcendant Music

Beautiful music that expresses and transcends our tradition is at the heart of what it means to be a sacred place for all people.

A wide array of musicians, from organists to pianists, choir members to vocal soloists, and instrumentalists contribute greatly to our worship services and community events.

Music & Art at Trinity Cathedral is a Cleveland-based arts organization that produces free noontime BrownBag concerts, seasonal evening concerts and collaborative programs.

Trinity Cathedral has a long history of bringing vibrant performances to downtown Cleveland. Cuyahoga Arts & Culture is proud to support Music and Art at Trinity…Their high-quality, free and accessible concerts help bring our community together in a welcoming environment, and we are grateful for their commitment to serving Cleveland through the arts.

Concerts at the Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral is a downtown destination for live music.

With the longest running free concert series in Greater Cleveland, the cathedral is a musical mainstay. Our concerts create beauty and transcendence in the heart of a sacred space.

Brownbag Concert Series

The Brownbag concert series began in 1978 in the centuries-old Anglican tradition of providing quality music and arts free-of-charge for residents, students, and workers in the acoustical and architectural splendor of a cathedral.

It is now the longest-running free concert series in the Greater Cleveland area.

Brownbag concerts are offered 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 12PM, September to May. As the name implies, you are welcome to bring lunch into the cathedral while you enjoy the performance.

The concerts feature a great diversity of music genres, including classical, jazz, Big Band, folk, choral and dance, and our performers include local artists and those from all around the country.

The Brownbag Concert Series is sponsored by Music and Art at Trinity, Inc. a 501(c)(3) arts organization committed to high-quality, free, and accessible concerts in a beautiful downtown space.

Evening Concerts

Trinity’s seasonal concerts are open to all and are occasions to experience world-class music and artists in the beauty of the cathedral space.

From newly commissioned works to choral favorites, from seasonal offerings to concerts that mark major events in the life of our nation, Trinity Cathedral’s concerts create beauty and transcendence in the heart of a sacred space.

Recent examples include a concert in observance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, our annual Good Friday concerts with the Trinity Cathedral Choir, Bach’s St. John Passion, internationally-renowned harpist Parker Ramsay playing his own transcription of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and a concert by the choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, England.

We are grateful for the financial support of the Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

Trinity Cathedral Choir

Lift Every Voice & Sing

Trinity is blessed with an outstanding choral ensemble that provide music for worship services, including Choral Evensong.

The Trinity Cathedral Choir, established in 1907, provides music for Trinity’s 11:15 a.m. service, weekly Choral Evensong services and other special events.

Members range from high-school and college students through adults of all ages. Although some of its members are professionals, the choir is open through audition to volunteers with good sight-reading skills who can commit themselves to its regular schedule of rehearsals and services.

Fun, friendship and the shared bond of music-making make this a special group. The Cathedral Choir (established in 1907) also makes appearances at Music & Art at Trinity Cathedral’s BrownBag and seasonal evening concerts.

Trinity’s choral ensembles are made up of professional and volunteer singers with rehearsals occurring weekly.

Cathedral Organs

History of Trinity Cathedral

Trinity’s pipe organs include a mechanical-action organ by the famous Dutch firm Flentrop in 1977. This organ consists of 39 ranks over 3 manuals, and is located in a gallery at the rear of the cathedral nave.

A new Muller pipe organ was installed in the chancel in 2021. This instrument combines the Aeolian-Skinner organ built originally for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia with pipes from a Skinner organ at the Church of the Transfiguration in Cleveland, donated by the Diocese of Ohio, along with new pipework and mechanical components. It has 4 manuals and 51 ranks.
