Welcome Eric Travis
Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry at Trinity Cathedral
I am excited to share with you the news that I have called Eric Travis to serve as the Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry at Trinity Cathedral. Eric is an enthusiastic, faithful, and deeply experienced youth and children’s minister who has served multiple dioceses and congregations. As a congregational youth and young adult minister, he has served churches in Springfield, MO, the Chicago suburb of Lake Forest, IL, and most recently Greenville, SC, where he currently lives. His diocesan work includes serving as the Canon for Youth Ministry in the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York, and twelve years as the Missioner for Youth and Young Audits in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.
Eric brings a passion for youth and children’s ministry and an extensive toolbox for carrying out this work. He has played every role you can imagine, from teaching Sunday school for 3-5th graders to training youth ministry volunteers from across the 72-church diocese of Michigan. He has worked for the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ youth in local, diocesan, and national gatherings, he has created innovative youth confirmation programs and he is a leader in developing the nationwide Safe Church Guidelines that empower us to care for all who are involved in this life-giving ministry.
Eric not only has many years of faithful experience in ministering to youth and children; he is also excited about Trinity’s vision for this ministry and the unique opportunities that are before us. He is gifted at building trust quickly, at creating opportunities to grow community, and at strengthening the volunteer base that is vital to any youth ministry program.
Eric’s hire follows an extensive search that introduced us to candidates and youth programs from across the country and is very much the product of the feedback of the Trinity congregation. The Rev. Adrienne Koch and I began by reaching out to each household to invite a conversation about your hopes and dreams, and I am grateful for the input we received… and for your prayers.
Eric will start work at Trinity on Sunday, May 15th, and we’ll have opportunities for children and youth to meet him then. He’ll then work remotely for several weeks as he and his wife Julie prepare for their move to the Cleveland area. I hope you’ll join me in offering Eric a warm welcome, and in giving him the support that will enable this ministry to thrive.
The Very Rev. Bernard J. Owens
