The Dean’s Corner: Reflecting and Preparing

The Dean’s Corner

Reflecting and Preparing

This Sunday we’ll gather online for Trinity Cathedral’s annual meeting, to reflect on the year 2020, to consider where we’re heading next, and to elect new vestry, cathedral council and nominating committee members. Though this is our second “virtual” meeting, Sunday’s gathering will be a live webcast held over Zoom. You’ll be able to ask questions in real time through the Q&A box and we’ll do our best to answer in the moment, and at the end of the meeting we’ll have time for a few live questions.  If you plan to vote via mail I assume you’ve already dropped it in the mail; if not, you can drop off your ballot at church Sunday morning, where a member of the nominating committee will be awaiting your vote.

We have worked hard this year on an annual report that’s a bit different from previous editions. The “look” is roughly the same but we’ve made some changes to how the report is organized and how we tell our story, in part to capture a very irregular year and in part to chart a course for where we go from here. Borrowing terms from The Rev. Dr. Sam Wells, vicar of St. Martin in the Fields in London, we are considering our ministries through three interlocking categories:

Discipleship:  How we each grow in faith and in awareness of God’s presence

Ministry:  How, in the setting of a congregation, we grow in faith through service, companionship and mutual care

Mission: How we go out in the world, not simply to serve but to meet Jesus

To be a part of a cathedral is to live our lives in all three places! We’ll distribute the 2020 Annual Report on Friday so I hope you’ll spend some time with it this weekend, and then be sure to join us on Sunday for the Annual Meeting itself.
