Absalom Jones was a living profile in courage. Born a slave in 1746, he worked as a clerk in his owner’s store by day and attended an all-black school at night. He founded the Free African Society, out of which grew the African Church in April 1787. Jones’ St. Thomas African Episcopal Church was received into the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania in October 1794. He was ordained a priest in 1802, becoming the first ordained priest of African descent in the United States.
