Featured Choral Evensong from Wednesday, October 2, 2019

George Kennedy Allen Bell

As we enter the month of October, we share as our featured Evensong the service from the first Wednesday in October last year. (What a year it’s been!)

Evensong that evening was sung by the Cathedral Choir with the Dean of Trinity Cathedral, The Very Rev’d Bernard J. Owens, as homilist.  The Responses were sung to the setting by Craig Phillips, director of music at All Saints’ Church, Beverly Hills, CA. The canticles are sung to the richly romantic setting in A minor by T. Tertius Noble. Noble was musician at England’s York Minster before moving to New York City in 1913 to establish the Choir School at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, where he remained for over 30 years. Noble’s successor at York Minster was Edward C. Bairstow, who in turn stayed at York for over 30 years, and wrote the anthem “Let all mortal flesh keep silence.”
