Isaac Watts, Hymnwriter, 1748
This week’s featured Choral Evensong was sung by the Trinity Chamber Singers on November 28, 2018. The Rev. Gregory Stark (former Curate at Christ Church, Oberlin) was the homilist as we commemorated Isaac Watts, one of the greatest hymn writers of any era.
The canticles are sung to the famous setting in G by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). Kristine Caswelch was the soprano soloist in the Magnificat, and Daniel Fridley was the bass soloist in the Nunc Dimittis. The anthem, “See, see the Word is Incarnate,” is one of the most vivid and powerful works by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625). Its remarkable text, by Bishop Godfrey Goodman, traces Christ’s life from birth to Ascension in a series of distinct yet connected tableaux.
