George Kennedy Allen Bell, Bishop of Chichester, and Ecumenist, 1958
This week’s featured Choral Evensong was sung by the Trinity Chamber Singers on Oct. 3, 2018. The Rev. Dr. Paul Gaston, former Acting Dean of Trinity Cathedral, was homilist as we commemorated George Kennedy Allen Bell, Bishop of Chichester and a leader in the Ecumenical movement.
The Preces and Responses are sung to the sprightly setting by John Reading (c. 1645-1692). The canticles and anthem are by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625). Though Gibbons lived only 37 years he is regarded as a towering figure in English music, and an important transitional figure between the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are from Gibbons’ Short Service, and the anthem is his elegantly simple setting of “O thou, the central orb of Righteous love”.
