The Service of Tenebrae — Wednesday, April 17, 2019
Our Tenebrae service last year featured the Lamentations for Five Voices by English composer Robert White (c. 1538-1574), sung by the Trinity Chamber Singers. The Lamentations are superb examples of vocal architecture, carefully channeling the emotion toward the concluding phrase “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, convertere ad Dominum Deum tuum” (Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord, your God). The power of White’s setting of these famous words has been apparent to those who have heard it almost since the day it was written.
