Trinity’s New Acting Dean and New Dean Search Committee
A Message from Trinity’s Wardens
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are very pleased to announce that the Bishop and Wardens have appointed The Rev. Dr. Paul L. Gaston, III as Trinity Cathedral’s Acting Dean. Dr. Gaston will begin in this role on March 1, 2017. In accepting this appointment, he concludes three years’ service as priest associate at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Akron. Prior to St. Paul’s, he served several churches in the Diocese of Ohio as, among other roles, priest-in-charge and interim. These include: St. Mark’s, Canton; Christ Church, Hudson; St. John’s, Cuyahoga Falls; and St. John’s, Youngstown.
Dr. Gaston has been ordained for 27 years, serving in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. throughout his ministry, he has been “bi-vocational,” balancing ministry in the Church with work in higher education. A former provost at Kent State University for 18 years, he is currently the University’s Trustees’ Professor, teaching English literature and higher education administration, from which he will retire in May.
On Ash Wednesday, Dr. Gaston will preach at Trinity’s noon and 6 p.m. services. On Sunday, March 5, he will preach at all three services and be introduced at the Dean’s Forum. We invite you to worship, meet and warmly welcome him into the Trinity community.
With the appointment of the Acting Dean, we now begin the process of finding Trinity’s new permanent dean. We recognize that periods of transition can be accompanied by feelings of uncertainty, but the reality is that this is an exciting time to be a member of Trinity Cathedral. This transition is not just about selecting a new dean, it is also about addressing how we model Trinity as a cathedral church. The following Trinity members have agreed to serve on the search committee and lead us in pursuing these goals:
David Cratty, Chair
Amy Ryder-Wentz, ex officio
Jeff Baddeley, ex officio
A member of the Cathedral Council will also be added to the committee, along with 2 or 3 members of other congregations in the Diocese who will provide insights and input from the wider church. We will announce those new members as they are added. As well, the Rev. Percy Grant, Canon for Ministry and clergy deployment officer, has agreed to serve as the Search Consultant, a resource provided to every congregation in transition. See an updated Search Committee roster.
The Cathedral’s by-laws provide that the Vestry shall “elect a Dean upon nomination of the Bishop of the Diocese in consultation with a search committee of the Cathedral.” To that end, the search committee, the Vestry, and the Bishop will work collaboratively to identify the best clergy companion for Trinity Cathedral. The committee’s first charge is to review what our vocation is as a cathedral church. With input from the congregation, the civic community, and other Diocesan congregations, the committee will explore and articulate our common understanding of Trinity’s calling, now and in the years ahead. A profile of Trinity Cathedral will emerge from this collaborative work, to be used in recruiting and evaluating candidates.
We have a wonderful Acting Dean now in place to support and guide us, and the search for our permanent dean is underway. Many have stepped forth to lend their help and energy, for which we are grateful. With your support, we will emerge with a new dean and stronger in community and faith. We will strive to keep you apprised of the search process as it unfolds. In the meantime, if you have questions or comments about this process, please feel free to ask us, or any of the members on the search committee. We ask you to keep the search committee in your prayers.
