Advent is a season of expectation and anticipation about what God will do. Often there is a passivity associated with the season. But what if that anticipation calls for our participation, a kind of active waiting? What are you expecting in this season? What might be expected of you? How might you participate in a life more deeply rooted in Christ? How does a contemplative season lead us to action? Stories of Isaiah, John the Baptist and Mary help us answer these questions, with plenty of time for quiet throughout the day.

The Rev. Jay Sidebotham is the executive director of RenewalWorks, a ministry of Forward Movement, the people behind Forward Day by Day and other resources to nurture discipleship and encourage evangelism. Siebotham previously served as rector of Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Ill., where he led the congregation through an intensive and sustained period of spiritual growth and renewal. Before coming to Church of the Holy Spirit, he served at St. Bart’s, New York City; St. Columba’s, Washington, D.C.; St. Luke’s, Durham, N.C.; and St. Martin’s, Providence, R.I. He is well known for his cartoons about church life and his animation work on the television cartoon Schoolhouse Rock! He has also worked in New York in the fields of animation, illustration, and advertising.
