The annual Absalom Jones Feast Day and Celebration will be held at Trinity Cathedral on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. This yearly event celebrates the life of Jones who was born a slave, bought his freedom, and was later ordained in 1804 as the first African-American priest in The Episcopal Church.
The Rev. Canon Wilson H. Willard, Jr., Rector of St. Andrew’s Church, Cincinnati, Ohio, Retired, will preach. The The Rt. Rev. Arthur B. Williams, Jr., Assisting Bishop, Diocese of Ohio, will preside. The service will also include a celebration choir, directed by Todd Wilson and liturgical dancers from St. Andrew’s Church, Cleveland.
A reception will follow the service. The program is sponsored by the Wilma Ruth Combs Union of Black Episcopalians Northern Ohio Chapter, The Episcopal Diocese of Ohio and Trinity Cathedral.
