Trinity Cathedral: The Episcopal Church in Downtown Cleveland

A letter from Dean Tracey Lind

Dear Friends:

Earlier this year, I asked John Church to become Trinity Cathedral's chief operating officer. When he accepted the job, one of my first requests was that we work together to make our staff structure more effective, efficient, and conducive to doing ministry. We are pleased to report that after three months of work, Trinity's new staff structure was approved by the Vestry at its June meeting and has now been shared with staff members.

We believe that the new structure represents not only sound management but also good stewardship. Trinity's staff includes many experienced and committed people, and their gifts and abilities are resources just as important as the money we collect in each week's plate. I am pleased that we are now providing them with the opportunity to work more effectively and successfully.

Staff Structure as of July 2010

The Dean: I am Trinity's senior pastor and CEO and am responsible for pastoral, institutional and civic leadership; preaching, teaching and worship leadership; visioning, planning and oversight; diocesan, ecumenical and interfaith relations. I also represent Trinity on a number of civic and church boards and committees. I am the liaison with the Vestry, Cathedral Council (with the Curate), the Chapter, the Adult Education Team and Ten Thousand Villages.

Chief Operating Officer: John Church, our interim COO, is responsible for property, finance, human resources, legal matters, technology services and organizational development. He is the liaison to the Property Committee, the Personnel Committee, the Finance Committee, the Investment Committee and the Trinity Commons Executive Committee. He reports to me.

Canon for Music and Worship: Dr. Horst Buchholz is responsible for worship planning and coordination; artistic direction for Music & Art at Trinity; choir and orchestra direction; development and oversight of the children's music program; and is the worship liaison with the Diocese. Horst is the liaison with lay worship ministers, Music & Art at Trinity (with the Program and Hospitality Coordinator), the Boar's Head Committee and the choir. He reports to me.

Curate: The Rev. Will Mebane is responsible for membership development, pastoral care, congregational life, health and wellness, neighborhood ministry, peace and justice; and, together with the Dean, preaching, teaching and worship. He is the liaison to Cathedral Council (with the Dean), the Peace and Justice Team (with the Communications Director), the Neighborhood Team, and the Health and Wellness Team. He reports to me.

Program and Hospitality Coordinator: Steve Loger is responsible for adult education, coordination of Music & Art at Trinity, hospitality management, and columbarium management. His hospitality responsibilities include space scheduling, parking, security, custodial services, and catering as well as major event, wedding and funeral coordination. Melvina Blair will assist him in space scheduling while continuing in her existing role as support for the COO. He is the liaison to the Flower Guild, the Green Team, Music & Art at Trinity (with the Canon for Music and Worship), and the Adult Education Team. He reports both to me and to the Chief Operating Officer.

Congregational Life Associate: Ginger Bitikofer, now a full-time employee, is responsible for children's ministry, membership, family ministry, cathedral life events; the Sunday News, tract racks and bulletin boards; and small group ministry coordination. She is the liaison to the Membership Team, the Cathedral Life Team, the Children and Youth Team, Parents and Caregivers, Community Garden and the Marion-Sterling Partnership. She reports to the Curate, and the childcare workers report to her.

Health and Wellness Minister/Parish Nurse: Terrie Doboze, who works 10 hours each week, is responsible for individual health and wellness consultations; occasional home, hospital, nursing facility and doctor office visits; and some educational programming. She is the liaison to the Health and Wellness Team and reports to the Curate.

Cathedral Intern: Adam Spencer is responsible for youth ministry, young adults, our planned Episcopal Service Corps project, and worship and adult education program support. He is the liaison to the Children & Youth team and reports to me.

Communications Director: Consultant Rebecca Wilson is responsible for This Week@Trinity, Cathedral Connection, the website, advertising, media relations, and assisting with program development and grant writing and reporting. She reports to me.

To complement our existing staff team, we are making two additional changes:

Development Director: We have posted an opening for a development director and hope to make that hire in August. That person will be responsible for annual giving and stewardship, planned giving, capital fundraising, foundation relations, corporate support and UTO and the Bishop's Appeal. She or he will be the liaison to the Development Committee and the Stewardship Committee.

Executive Assistant: We will soon post an opening for a full-time executive assistant. That person will provide secretarial support to me; will assume some of Melvina Blair's responsibilities so that she can handle scheduling space use; and will support the work of other management team members as needed.

Please let me know if you have questions about who does what in our new structure, or talk with any of our staff team members to find out more about their new responsibilities and projects. Even as we settle into our new roles and new structure, we are ever mindful that we are privileged to minister with all of you to the congregation, the community, and all of God's creation.

Faithfully,

Dean Lind
