Sister Helen Prejean, acclaimed author of the international bestseller Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, has been at the forefront of the anti-death penalty in the United States for several decades. She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille in 1957. In the early 1980s, Prejean became involved with prison ministry, counseling death row inmates in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Gustav Niebuhr: Beyond Tolerance: How People Across America Are Building Bridges Between Faiths

On Wedensday November 18 we welcomed Gus Niebuhr to Trinity. Over a 20-year career in journalism, including at The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, Gus Niebuhr has established a reputation as a leading writer about American religion. He is currently associate professor in religion and the media at Syracuse University.

Niebuhr’s book, Beyond Tolerance: How People Across America Are Building Bridges Between Faiths, tells the story of his conversations with Americans- Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, Baptists, Muslims and Episcopalians-who are all reaching out to find common ground among their beliefs.

Tony Campolo Visits Trinity

On Wednesday, October 29, Trinity hosted renowned preacher, media commentator and author Tony Campolo. Campolo, an evangelical Christian known for his progressive social attitudes, has challenged the church to take action on behalf of the poor and oppressed.

Campolo has appeared on television programs including The Colbert Report, Nightline, Crossfire, Politically Incorrect, The Charlie Rose Show, Larry King Live, CNN Dayside, CNN News and MSNBC News. He is the author of 35 books, including, most recently, Red Letter Christians, A Citizen’s Guide to Faith and Politics and The God of Intimacy and Action.

The Dean and President’s Forum: An Evening with Author James Carroll

The Denver Post has called James Carroll “one of the most adept and versatile writers on the American scene today.” The author of The New York Times bestselling Constantine’s Sword and Boston Globe columnist, visited on Trinity Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Carroll, a former Catholic priest and the son of an Air Force general, has long written about the problematic relationships between religion and discrimination, violence and war. His most recent work is Jerusalem, Jerusalem: How the Ancient City Ignited Our Modern World.

Cuyahoga County Executive Candidate Forum

On Wednesday, April 21, 2010, the Rt. Rev. John Shelby presented a lecture at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland. Bishop Spong, whose books have sold more than a million copies, was the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark for 24 years before his retirement in 2001. Now Bishop Spong, a leading Christian liberal and activist, has written a new spiritual autobiography, Eternal Life: A New Vision. In Eternal Life, he goes beyond religion and Christianity to an understanding that the fully realized human life empties into and participates in the eternity of God.

Bishop Gene Robinson: What Storm is God Calling You Into?

The Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson is the Ninth Bishop of New Hampshire, a position to which he was elected by the people of that diocese in 2003. A graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee and General Theological Seminary, his first ordained position was as curate at Christ Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey–a position also held, several years later, by Dean Lind.

Bishop Robinson is a leader in clergy wellness, AIDS education, debt relief for impoverished nations and socially responsible investing. He serves as a member of the Church Pension Fund and the New Hampshire Children’s Alliance.

Known around the world as a hero in the movement for the full inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, Bishop Robinson told his story in the 2007 feature-length documentary For the Bible Tells Me So and in his 2008 book In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God. He has received two honorary doctorates and numerous civil rights awards. In January 2009, at the invitation of Barack Obama, he gave the invocation at the opening inaugural ceremonies held at the Lincoln Memorial.
