The annual Absalom Jones Feast Day and Celebration will be held at Christ Church, 3445 Warrensville Center Road, Shaker Heights, on Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. This yearly event celebrates the life of Jones who was born a slave, bought his freedom, and was later ordained in 1804 as the first African-American priest in The Episcopal Church.
The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina, will preach at the service. Curry–one of America’s greatest preachers–was elected eleventh Bishop of North Carolina in 2000. He is a graduate of Yale University Divinity School. The Rt. Rev. Arthur Williams, Jr., assisting bishop in the Diocese of Ohio will celebrate. The event features the Heritage Chorale.
