Trinity Cathedral is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio . This means that Trinity is part of the Episcopal Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion Anglican Communion whose members trace their spiritual lineage to the Church of England.

Frequently Asked Questions

All are welcome, regardless of faith, creed, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, marital status and age. Not to put too fine a point on it: all are welcome.
By all means! Trinity Cathedral is family-friendly, and your children may either remain with you during services or you may take advantage of Sunday nursery care. Our Sunday morning 9 a.m. Mostly Jazz Mass is particularly kid-friendly, and there you will find many (but not all) of our families with children. There are also a number of Sunday education opportunities for children, youth and adults of all ages.
There are theological differences between the two churches – some subtle, some not so subtle. There are several key differences, though: The Pope is not the head of the Episcopal Church, although we recognize him as the head bishop of another branch of the Christian Church. In the Episcopal Church, women, as well as men, including gay men and lesbians, can be priests and bishops, and priests can also be married and/or partnered. Moreover, all Christians are welcome to take communion in Episcopal churches, not just Episcopalians.
When the Church of England (the mother church of the Episcopal Church) was established in the 16th century by Queen Elizabeth, it was conceived as the “middle way” between Catholicism and the Protestant Reformation that was sweeping Europe. And so, the Episcopal Church traditionally has been a place where many points of view – and many questions – are welcomed as part of the life of faith. That faith is based on what we call the “three-legged stool”: Scripture, tradition and reason.

We will always have questions, but in the two foundational statements of faith – the Apostles’ Creed used at baptism, and the Nicene Creed used at communion – we join Christians throughout the ages in affirming our faith in the one God who created us, redeemed us, and sanctifies us.

At Trinity Cathedral, the clergy regularly invite all present to partake in Communion. If you have questions or wish to know more about Communion, one of the principal sacraments of the Episcopal Church, speak with any member of our clergy following a service or contact a member of the pastoral staff .
Every Episcopal parish has their own requirements for weddings. We welcome those who wish to be married or have their same-sex unions/marriages blessed at Trinity Cathedral. We require four months’ notice prior to a wedding, and at least one of the parties must be a baptized Christian. Premarital counseling is required by the canons of the Episcopal Church. On Sundays, Trinity Cathedral offers three morning worship services at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. A 5 p.m. service is held on the first Sunday of the month from October through June. There is no preacher at the weekly Compline service, held Sundays at 9 p.m. Trinity’s summer schedule typically runs from Independence Day through Labor Day and services are offered at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Click here to learn more about the Cathedral’s worship services. The 2011-2012 Service Corps class discusses the various components that make up the Trinity Cathedral Urban Service Corps program.

Intentional Community
“Community living is central to the Episcopal Service Corps experience. From the moment we arrived in Cleveland, the spirit of intentional community has been pervasive. Our first activity together during our opening retreat was to create a rule of life, using monastic codes as inspiration. Based on this living document, our house operates on a common framework that reflects our unique personality as a group. Unlike six ordinary roommates, we are all committed to fostering a supportive atmosphere. We strive to create community according to Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s assertion that ‘a person who loves community destroys community, but a person who loves people creates community wherever he goes.’ Our commitment to the program and to each other allows us to build a genuine community with shared values and open, honest dialogue. This spirit of community extends beyond our own home as we try to become more engaged in the city of Cleveland.”

Friday Community Day
“Discernment is a cornerstone of our year with the Episcopal Service Corps. We spend our Fridays pondering our futures and many of life’s other questions under the guidance of Program Director Adam Spencer. Our first order of Friday business is an 8 a.m. house meeting with pastries and such. After, we gather at Trinity Cathedral or at our home for brain food: something along the lines of Education for Ministry; presentations on, and conversations about, homelessness, worker rights, spirituality and more. At least once a month, we have guests (Service Employees International Union, formerly homeless individuals, spiritual directors) to facilitate these conversations. After a lunch break, we help out with Trinity’s Blessings in a Backpack program. We work with KG to fill 25 bags with enough food to nourish a family of four for the weekend. We deliver these bags to a local elementary and then return to Trinity to conclude with further dialogue on social issues of interest or our, twice monthly, book discussion. Each month we are assigned a piece of literature that relates to that month’s Friday programming and discussions. As of December we have enjoyed these selections: The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical, Crooked River Burning, The Fifth Mountain, The Selected Poems of Wendell Berry. We also regularly engage in exercises that aid in our discernment such as Trinity’s Culture of Call. Culture of Call allows each of us to better recognize our strengths and envision our futures. As we spend our workdays apart, Fridays are a great chance for us to be together as a community and to build toward a more complete understanding of one another.”

Site Placements
“A major part of the ESC program is our site placement work that we do Monday through Thursday. We have each been placed at different nonprofit organizations doing work that improves the surrounding community. We were introduced to each potential site placement and given a tour or an explanation of the mission and goals of the organization. At The Cleveland Leadership Center, we underwent a process that was much like speed dating with each employee that was quite intimidating, but fun nonetheless. We then ranked the organizations — and some of them ranked us — in order of our preferences. We were promised to be able to work at one of our top three placements. Luckily, this worked out for most of us and nobody was given their third choice!

Alex was lucky enough to be chosen out of the speed dating process to work at The Cleveland Leadership Center, where he has been busy writing grants and has been engaged in the various leadership programs that CLC offers. Marguerite has been working at The Stockyard Clark-Fulton and Brooklyn Centre Community Development Office where she has been given the prestigious title of “Greenspace Specialist.” Her main duties have been graffiti abatement, supporting urban gardeners and researching the feasibility of using goats to “mow” grass on vacant lots. Sarah has been working at Westcreek Preservation Committee designing their website, going door to door with fliers, and coordinating and attending meetings to discuss the importance of new trails and environmentally sustainable development in Parma. Peter is working at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries where he works with individuals to promote self-advocacy at the 2100 Lakeside Mens Shelter, and has been helping to implement and research various advocacy-based projects to support the elderly, violence prevention in schools and environmental justice. Gwen has been working at Trinity Cathedral with the hunger program, Blessings in a Backpack, where she exercises her leadership skills in organizing the rest of her fellow interns and volunteers on Fridays to prepare backpacks of food for nearby low-income students. Laura is working for Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, making block club postcard reminders, learning about the dynamics of the community involvement office and helping to plan and attend various events such as the Eco-Village Design Charrette, annual fundraiser and various block club meetings.”

The City
“While much of the program was described as a time to discern our vocations or to be intentional about our lifestyles something that became immediately apparent in this process was the larger community. No, I do not mean the world, but the city of Cleveland. It is a city that has been faced with a plethora of economic issues and political pitfalls. In other words, it is a place that has suffered greatly from its neighborhoods to its downtown. But, like any city there is still a great bar and restaurant scene, music venues and theatres. Every city has attractions and that is usually all that anyone ever sees or knows about—for example, Cleveland equals the Browns, the Indians, 4th street and the Cavs for many people. But, this program has made it an unavoidable occurrence to see the behind the scenes; the reasons why there are now committed elected officials, a booming entrepreneurial population, hundreds of committed nonprofits and thousands of empowered, not to mention knowledgeable, people. The real ebb and flow of a city is invisible in the cursory glance of its flashiest attractions. The intentionality of this program has pushed us as individuals and a group to learn more. Through exploration of the issues facing the urban core and forming relationships with empowered people committed to the health of the city we have discovered that the more involved one is, the more the city comes to life.”

Sustainability and Simple Living
“Sustainability and simple living are values integral to our program. The city of Cleveland itself is a great place for anyone interested in sustainability. We attended the annual “Sustainable Cleveland” Summit earlier this fall, and were inspired by the many people, from diverse walks of life, who had come together to make Cleveland ‘A Green City on a Blue Lake.’ Trinity Cathedral itself is committed to being ‘green’ and having discussions and education around environmental issues. Guerilla gardens on vacant lots are almost ubiquitous here; Cleveland’s residents have reacted to crisis by, literally, sowing the seeds of opportunity. Several of our site placements focus on environmental sustainability, whether it is preserving land, supporting urban gardeners, promoting environmental health in inner city neighborhoods or community organizing in an urban eco-village.

In our own home, we strive to live as simply and sustainably as possible. Our drive to live simply is supported by the structure of our program. Six people living together naturally use fewer resources than six people living individually; our limited stipends and communal food budget make it easier not to over-consume – although we hear that ESC is more generous than a few other church-based service programs out there! We get a bus and train pass, free, through the program, and Cleveland is pretty easy to get around via bike and foot. Though most of us have cars, we don’t use them much. We’ve agreed, in our community vows, to reduce, reuse, recycle and to be aware of our place in the larger ecosystem. Rather than being militant eco-nerds, we look at sustainability as a process and a continual conversation. We do not, for instance, shun anyone who leaves a light on by mistake. We did, however, buy a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share with locally grown, organic vegetables and have been cooking on our own as much as possible, rather than buying packaged, factory-farmed fare. We’ve baked several loaves of bread, made a few batches of yogurt, experimented with lacto-fermented vegetables and might go into brewing our own beer! We compost our food scraps, try to turn off lights, and recently installed fluorescent light bulbs, a programmable thermostat, and a low-flow showerhead as part of a ‘Green Your Block Club Challenge.’ In the spring, we hope to grow herbs in our yard.

The other part of sustainability and simplicity that I see, especially with regards to service and community living, is in balancing commitments. One of the challenges of this program for me is that there are so many wonderful opportunities in Cleveland, both in terms of community involvement and service as well as social and cultural activities. I am continually trying to balance my desire to be involved with my knowledge that I also need to keep things ‘simple’ and limit what I take on, so that I am able to ‘sustain’ myself. Like everything, it is a learning process, and this program, right now, is the perfect place to do this learning.”

Faith and Spirituality
“Interns do not have to be part of any particular faith to join the Service Corps. This year’s interns represent a wide diversity of experiences and faith journeys ranging from ‘cradle-born Episcopalian’ to others who were not raised with a church or religious commitment. Trinity is very inclusive and open as far as churches go, and the program strives to meet people where they are and help them discern their own journey, no matter what they believe.

That being said, we are an intentional community that prays together and has committed to being open with each other about our faith journey as we participate in a wide variety of religious activities. Trinity Cathedral is a huge support in so many ways including:

    Members donate money, time and household items and have been quick to respond if we expressed interest/need for something.
    We’re paired with a host family from the congregation who is there to connect with us, be a resource and give us a chance to get out and about in the city. This year, some of the experiences have included outings to sporting events, symphony concerts and home-cooked meals. Yum!
    We try to attend church services at Trinity at least twice a month. Most of us attend more than that and it’s a great experience! There are three distinctly different Sunday morning services so there’s a great chance of finding something that we can connect with.
    We’re able to participate completely in the life of the congregation, including Wednesday night programming, Sunday classes and forums, neighborhood ministries and more. This is a busy place and there is so much to choose from.
    Church members have offered their expertise in many different ways; from hosting us for dinner to leading reflections to giving us insight into their careers. They are present as a resource and support, it is so appreciated!

Report of the 2011 Nominating Committee

The 2011 Nominating Committee is pleased to present to the Congregation slates for election to the Vestry and Cathedral Council as well as delegates to Diocesan Convention and congregationally elected members of the Nominating Committee.

In keeping with Trinity’s bylaws, the Nominating Committee conducted an open and widely publicized solicitation of candidates; the result was a pool of talented and qualified candidates, and the Committee is grateful to all whose names were submitted for consideration.

Jeff Baddeley—term ending 2015

Jeff Baddeley is a partner in the Corporate Restructuring and Creditors’ Rights Group at Ulmer & Berne LLP. Jeff is married to Laura Rocker, a child psychiatrist. There is no truth to the rumor that she considers her marriage to be a pro bono extension of her practice. Jeff’s stepdaughter Rosa lives and works in New York City. He has served on the Vestry since 2009 and has served on Finance, Investment and Property Committees.

 

Alan Pires—term ending 2015

Alan Pires is the Director of Pharmacy Services at Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare, a division of the Ohio Department of Mental Health. He has been a member of Trinity Cathedral for six years and has completed EFM; he has served on the Vestry since 2010 and is the Chair of the Personnel Committee. Alan holds a pharmacy degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and received a Masters of Science in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University in 1999 and a Master’s in Nonprofit Management from the Mandel School in 2000. He and his partner Tim live on the west side of Cleveland with their dog Shiloh.

David Posteraro—term ending 2015

David Posteraro is a partner in the law firm of Kohrman Jackson & Krantz PLL. He has more than 20 years of experience in licensing, intellectual property asset management, technology transfer, joint development and other business law transactions for technology clients. He also advises religious organizations on church and non-profit issues and is a member of the Board of Directors of Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes. David has been a Vestry member since 2008 and currently serves as its Junior Warden. He has been active in the Cathedral’s stewardship, buildings and grounds and worship ministries. He resides in Cleveland.

Bruce Freeman—term ending 2014

Bruce Freeman is an Associate Instructor at Summit College of The University of Akron, teaching Human Relations and American Urban Society. He has previously served as Assistant Planning Director for the City of Cleveland, Public Safety Department Communications Planner for the City of Cleveland, and Planning Director for Medina County among other positions. He has been a member of Trinity for two years and currently serves as the co-chair of Trinity’s Greater Cleveland Congregations team. Bruce lives in Akron with his wife Jane.

 

Thomas Reuter—term ending 2015

Thomas Reuter has a background in senior management and leadership roles in nonprofit organizations. He most recently served as Trinity’s interim development associate. A member of Trinity for four years, Thomas says he is interested in leading the Cathedral’s year-round stewardship effort, “one that focuses on Trinity’s many assets, and utilizes its many opportunities to engage an ever-widening circle of ‘friends.’” He and his wife, the Rev. Amy Greene, reside in Cleveland.

 

Wendy Wilson-Walker—term ending 2015

Wendy Wilson-Walker has been active at Trinity for eight years and lives in Brecksville. Wendy served on Cathedral Council during 2011, is a member of Trinity’s Greater Cleveland Congregations leadership team, is part of Cathedral Council’s Neighborhood Ministries team, served as an usher and has participated with Knitting Pearls. She has been employed with AT&T since 1968, currently as a Network Operations Area Manager with offices in Lakewood, Ohio and Indianapolis..

Martin Hermes—term ending 2015

A life-long member of Trinity Cathedral, Martin Hermes has served on Cathedral Council since 2009. He has been active in youth, environmental, Diocesan and children’s ministries. He lives in Cleveland Heights.

 

Rob Bauer—term ending 2015

Active at Trinity for three years, Rob Bauer recently completed a one-year term on Cathedral Council. He was president of a small manufacturing company for more than a decade, is a realtor and has experience in nonprofit management and development. He is a past trustee of Pilgrim UCC and led many committees when he was a member of Berea United Methodist Church. At Trinity, Rob has been active in the peace and justice team, new member ministry, and Cathedral life events among other activities. He lives in North Royalton.

Barbara Crouse—term ending 2015

Barbara Crouse has almost 30 years of experience in broadcasting and is currently an account manager at 90.3 WCPN/NPR and WVIZ/PBS. She has been involved at Trinity for two years, participating in Cathedral life events as well as new member ministry. Barbara finds the worship services inspirational, but adds that she is also “drawn to Trinity because it walks the walk for social justice and civic involvement.” She adds that she is eager to do her part in this work. Barbara resides in Fairview Park.

Marcia Egbert—term ending 2013

Marcia Egbert is the senior program officer for health and human services at The George Gund Foundation. Prior to that she served as vice president at the Urban Policy Institute, intergovernmental relations director for Cuyahoga County and as staff to the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives. Marcia has been active at Trinity for six years and has been involved with the peace and justice team. She finds Trinity to be a “unique place and space that plays an invaluable role in our community. I’ve come to believe Trinity creates a special ‘spirit’ where great things can and do happen.” Marcia lives in Cleveland with her husband and son.

Jon Benedict

Jon has been active at Trinity since 2008. He is the vice president of a consulting firm called R Strategy Group specializing in strategic communications, advocacy, public relations, political counsel and campaigns and has worked in strategic communications consulting for 10 years. Jon is also the editor and co-owner of edible Cleveland, a new quarterly magazine focusing on the people and stories of Northeast Ohio’s local food scene. He and his wife, Noelle Celeste, live in Cleveland Heights.

 

 

Ute Vilfroy

An active member of Trinity for 40 years, Ute Vilfroy is a court administrator and magistrate of the Ohio Court of Appeals – 8th District. She is a past Vestry member and Cathedral Trustee. Ute has been involved in many areas of Trinity, including youth ministry, music, Diocesan ministry, stewardship and more. She resides in Broadview Heights.

Mike Graska, Delegate

Mike has been active at Trinity for 16 years. He is a supply chain and logistics consultant and has managed wind energy projects in North America, Europe, India and China. He and his wife, Karla, live in Brecksville.

 

Jane Freeman, Alternate

Jane Freeman is an Independent Social Worker and Clinical Counselor in private practice as well as Director of Behavioral Science in Family Medicine Residency at Akron General Medical Center—a position she has held for more than 30 years. She has been active at Trinity for the past year and has been involved as a Eucharistic Minister and visitor as well as co-facilitates adult Bible study. She has led adult-education classes as part of the Cathedral’s Wednesday evening programming and at the Diocesan level serves on Commission on Ministry plus other panels and committees. Jane lives in Akron with her husband Bruce.

At 10:30 that night, we’ll have prelude music for choir, organ and trumpet prior to our 11 pm  Choral Eucharist. And on Christmas morning, join us for Eucharist with Carols at 10. No matter whether you are coming to church for the first time or have been an Episcopalian all your life, we hope that you might spend Christmas with us.
